Birmingham resident fulfills lifelong dream at LSA

Ever since she was a little girl, Le Kira Wright always knew she wanted to be a lawyer. A little over one month ago, that dream came true, as Wright joined LSA’s Birmingham Regional Office as Staff Attorney, on March 18, 2019.

“I always wanted to be an attorney,” Wright said. “My goal was always to be able to help people who can’t help themselves.”

Having a bachelor’s in English from Kentucky State University and a MPA from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Wright earned a J.D. from Birmingham’s Cumberland School of Law in 2016.

As Elder Law Staff Attorney, Wright assists seniors with estate planning services, drafting and execution of Last Will & Testaments, Advance Directives, and Powers-of-Attorney to name a few.

Working with the elderly, Wright stated, is something she enjoys.

“Throughout law school, I worked at a nursing home as a CNA- a [Certified] Nursing Assistant, so working for the Area Agency on Aging [United Way] is right up my alley,” Wright said.

While in Law School, Wright interned with LSA’s Birmingham Office (2015). She also worked for the City of Birmingham as a legal secretary.

“This was actually one of the internships I enjoyed the most,” Wright said. “The bulk of what we do is estate planning. We have those who come in with things like evictions or who need property deeded over to different people … It’s very hands-on. I love it!”

Wright also stated her experience as a legal secretary will help with her efficiency overall on the program’s Elder Law grant.

“I have a secretarial mindset of, ‘How can we do this more efficiently?’” Wright said. “With the Area Agency grant, we get a lot of referrals, so we can create a file with every referral [that would help with] contacting that person [directly].”

When not practicing, Wright enjoys spending time with her two sons – ages 5 and 6, who are very active.

“Right now I am a soccer mom,” Wright chuckled. “A couple of months ago I was a basketball mom.”
