PARTNERS FOR JUSTICE

Pro Bono for Attorneys, Law Students, Professionals, and Community Members

With your participation, Legal Services Alabama and our partners throughout the state are able to increase access to justice for Alabamians that live at or below the poverty level. Through a network of Volunteer Lawyer Programs, Alabama Free Legal Answers, and LSA’s private attorney involvement activities, there are multiple opportunities to volunteer your time and expertise! The civil legal needs of our clients typically cover multiple practice areas, most notably consumer protection, housing preservation and foreclosure defense, and domestic violence response and prevention.

Please note: LSA’s Partners for Justice Program is designed to complement existing staff services and specific legal areas of need. This means that program attorneys are selected based on areas of practice, location, and the needs of the local office. Attorneys who practice in rural counties are encouraged to apply.

If you have any questions, please connect with Holly Ray, Pro Bono Manager, at 256-536-1544, or hray@alsp.org

Benefits of Volunteering Your Services

Legal Services Alabama uses volunteers to assist our local offices and to help with under-served communities. By becoming involved with our organization, volunteers gain valuable legal experience and first-hand knowledge of how the public interest legal sector operates. Most importantly, volunteers will provide an invaluable service to low-income communities.

As a volunteer, you will:

  • Gain experience in several areas of public interest law, such as family, housing, collection lawsuits, bankruptcy, public benefits, tax, education, and employment
  • Assist clients with the completion of intake questionnaires and applications
  • Work with a Managing Attorney to assist clients with their legal problems
  • Determine the eligibility of our clients by calculating income, learning about assets, and inquiring about factors that make clients eligible for legal services
  • Use knowledge of substantive law to develop and enhance intake questionnaires, as well as self-help materials for our clients
  • Learn interviewing techniques, case analysis, and issue spotting in areas of public interest law
  • Become a skilled listener, who will gather information in a considerate and respectful manner, analyze the facts, and apply substantive knowledge
