LSA seeks applications from qualified persons for a Grant Writer.

This is a full-time position with LSA’s headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama. Remote work is possible.

Under the general supervision of the Director of Development, the Grant Writer will research, develop, write and apply for various grants that meet the organization’s needs. The Grant Writer provides high-level assistance to the Director of Development throughout the grant cycle and will oversee the grant application process from beginning to end. Excellent written skills, flexibility, attention to detail and deadlines, organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality, sound judgment, and initiative. The Grant Writer will promote LSA’s mission, values and principles within the regional offices, the organization as a whole and the community.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Experience with non-profits preferred.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience in successful grant writing.
  • Must be self-motivated and organized.
  • Ability to work timely and effectively; independently or as part of a team.

Call Center Intake Specialist

This is a full-time position headquartered out of our Montgomery Office.

The Intake Specialist will conduct high volume intake, complete applications and accurately record data into a case management system, refer applicants to a variety of resources, work in a virtual environment, and be able to work independently and within a team. The Intake Specialist reports directly to the Managing Attorney.  

Qualifications: This position is an exciting opportunity for someone who has the ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast-paced work environment. We are seeking candidates with a high school diploma or equivalent with two (2) years of experience working in customer service or a similar position. Preference will be given to those who have experience with non-profits or low-income populations.  Computer proficiency and the ability to work in database systems required.

Summer 2023 Clerkship

Legal Services Alabama is seeking law students dedicated to serving low income communities and increasing access to justice for Summer 2023 clerkship positions across the state. 

Summer Law Clerks assist LSA attorneys throughout the firm in representing clients, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting all aspects of the provision of civil legal aid.

LSA Summer Law Clerks also participate in our Clerkship Training Program which provides foundational skills in our core areas of practice—including housing, consumer law, family, education, elder, and public benefits. Clerks are encouraged to take advantage of other timely and innovative firm-wide opportunities and initiatives. Strong legal research and writing skills are required, creativity and innovation are preferred. 

Law students may be assigned to a particular office and/or practice area and will have strong mentors while expanding and enhancing client access and services.

John Lewis Legal Fellowship

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. In honor of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice to build experience with a nonprofit civil legal aid law firm located in Alabama.

This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA’s statewide offices in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of structural injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills, and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.

Qualifications: The position is an exciting opportunity for candidates who have sat for a Bar Exam or who are already licensed in any state. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law along with lived or other meaningful and sustained experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required and initiative and creativity are preferred. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual.
