Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA) is a statewide non-profit law firm that pursues its mission to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty. 

As a result of the COVID 19 pandemic, homelessness is rising in Alabama.

LSA seeks to contract with an Attorney to provide legal services to help prevent homelessness in Dothan Alabama.  The contract is expected to remain in effect for one year but may be renewable for a longer term subject to funding availability.  

To be considered, the proposing attorney must be admitted to practice in the State of Alabama. Other evaluation factors (to be considered equally) will include expertise and experience with Alabama public benefit and housing law, knowledge of the area and housing-related challenges.

ATTORNEY – CULLMAN, LAWRENCE AND MORGAN

This is a full-time position based in Decatur and Managed by LSA’s Huntsville Regional Office.  The attorney will assist in civil matters related to legal rights, benefits and entitlements through legal advice, counseling and representation to senior citizens in Cullman, Lawrence and Morgan counties.  Additionally, the attorney will provide community education for the elderly population. 

This project is sponsored by a grant through North Central Alabama Regional Council of Governments (NARCOG). 

Qualifications: Admitted to practice in the State of Alabama. Sensitivity towards low-income and elderly population. Strong legal writing and communication skills. Bilingual a plus.

LSA JOHN LEWIS LEGAL FELLOWSHIP

Legal Services Alabama (LSA), is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. As a non-profit law firm, our mission is to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty.

In honor of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established to support up to a full year of purposeful legal projects promoting the safety and wellbeing of low-income individuals.  This position will operate from one of LSA’s Regional Offices located in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.

This year’s John Lewis Fellowship is made possible through funds awarded by ADECA.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated willingness to devote their time and efforts to the betterment of society’s most vulnerable citizens. The John Lewis Fellow will focus on providing legal representation to clients who are facing homelessness and the ancillary problems created by homelessness in education, benefits, family violence, collections and other goals established by the Fellow and mission of LSA.

Qualifications: Applicants must be admitted to the Alabama Bar. Commitment to public interest law.  Experience working with low-income population a plus. Strong legal writing and communication skills.

Qualifications: Admitted to practice in the State of Alabama or willing to take necessary steps to be admitted to Alabama bar within 6 months of employment.  Sensitivity towards low-income population.
