Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is seeking to host a Borchard Legal Fellow who will join our vibrant and dedicated team. LSA provides free, client-centered civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities.
Fellowship Information:
The Borchard Fellowship in Law & Aging offers the opportunity to carry out a substantial project related to law and aging.
The fellowship is available to law school graduates interested in or pursuing an academic and/or professional career in law and aging.
The Borchard Fellow will assist in developing LSA’s growing Heir Property practice, with a focus on helping clients navigate the complex legal issues surrounding heir property. The intersection of heir property and elder law can be significant, particularly for older adults who own heir property. The Fellow will provide legal representation in civil legal matters with a primary focus on estate planning, long-term care planning, and assistance with resolving ownership disputes and clearing title. The Fellow will also conduct direct outreach in communities to educate clients about their rights and responsibilities related to heir property and provide guidance through the development of training modules and materials. The Fellow can work out of any of LSA’s offices in Alabama.

Legal Services Alabama is seeking law students dedicated to serving low income communities and increasing access to justice for Summer 2023 clerkship positions across the state.
Summer Law Clerks assist LSA attorneys throughout the firm in representing clients, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting all aspects of the provision of civil legal aid.
LSA Summer Law Clerks also participate in our Clerkship Training Program which provides foundational skills in our core areas of practice—including housing, consumer law, family, education, elder, and public benefits. Clerks are encouraged to take advantage of other timely and innovative firm-wide opportunities and initiatives. Strong legal research and writing skills are required, creativity and innovation are preferred.
Law students may be assigned to a particular office and/or practice area and will have strong mentors while expanding and enhancing client access and services.
