EVICTION DEFENSE PROJECT STAFF ATTORNEY

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. LSA is seeking two full-time staff attorneys.

One position will be based in the Northern Region of Alabama and the other position in the Southern Region of the state. LSA has eight regional offices. Each position will be supervised and managed by the Regional Office Managing Attorney to which the staff attorney is assigned.   

The attorney will assist in civil matters related to legal rights, benefits and entitlements through legal advice, counseling and representation to citizens referred from mental health service center. Additionally, the attorney will provide community legal education for the consumers of the service centers.   

This project is funded by a grant through the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) for an Eviction Defense Project.

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice in the State of Alabama.  
  • Sensitivity towards low-income population. 
  • Strong legal writing and communication skills. 
  • Bilingual a plus.

The position is funded by a grant awarded through the City of Birmingham.

The position will primarily involve completing rent assistance applications, working with clients to obtain documentation, and working with landlords. The Case Manager will maintain detailed records and input information into our online case management system. The ideal candidate with have strong administrative and professional skills. The position is expected to last one year.  

The Case Manager will help with intake, return phone calls, conduct screening and file management. This position requires flexibility, attention to detail and deadlines, organizational skills, strong computer skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and take the initiative. The Case Manager will work with other team members to develop goals and timelines for the successful implementation of the project. The Case Manager will comply with LSA’s mission, values, and principles within the regional office, the organization, and the community.
