The Staff Attorney will provide legal representation in civil legal matters with a primary focus on estate, family, housing, consumer, education, public benefits, and unemployment law.

This position is based out of the Dothan office and will serve clients in the surrounding counties.  

Qualifications: This position is an exciting opportunity for attorneys who are admitted to the Alabama Bar and who are passionate about serving low-income populations. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required. Preference is given to attorneys who are bilingual.

Staff Attorney - SELMA

Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA), is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. This is a full-time position based in the LSA Selma Regional Office.

The attorney will assist in civil matters related to legal rights, benefits, and entitlements through legal advice, counseling, and representation to senior citizens in Choctaw, Clarke, Conecuh, Dallas, Marengo, Monroe, Perry, Sumter, Washington, and Wilcox. counties.  The legal services provided will assist seniors who are the most vulnerable and who are at risk of losing their autonomy, dignity, or independence.

Additionally, the attorney will provide community education for the older population. 

This project is sponsored by a grant through Alabama Tombigbee Regional Commission (ATRC), Area Agency on Aging (AAA).

Heir Property Project Staff Attorney

The Heir Property Staff Attorney will provide legal representation in civil legal matters with a primary focus on estate, family, housing, consumer, education, public benefits, and unemployment law. The primary focus of the position will be to educate communities about heir property and the legal problems that can arise surrounding it and also assisting clients in resolving issues related to heir property. The attorney will organize and conduct legal materials, trainings, clinics, and strategy sessions to assist attorneys, litigants, and community partners.  

The position will require travel around the state of Alabama, particularly to the Black Belt area.

Administrative Assistant - Huntsville

This is a full-time position based in the LSA Huntsville Regional Office. The Administrative Assistant will perform administrative duties in a fast-paced law office and communicate frequently with community members and clients. The Administrative Assistant will report directly to the Managing Attorney.

Qualifications: This position is an exciting opportunity for someone with a high school diploma or equivalent with two (2) years of experience in customer service, secretarial, office, or another related field. Computer proficiency and the ability to work in database systems are required. The applicant must have the ability to become a licensed notary public. Preference will be given to those who are bilingual and who have experience with nonprofits. The ideal candidate would have a passion for serving low-income communities.

Paralegal – Huntsville

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is a statewide non-profit law firm whose mission is to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty. LSA seeks applications from qualified paralegals committed to supporting our mission. This is a full-time position located in our Huntsville regional office. 

Under the Managing Attorney’s supervision, the Paralegal will participate in community outreach, particularly to victims of domestic violence, and assist in providing civil legal services in the areas of consumer protection, housing, unemployment compensation, family law, probate matters, and other priorities established by the Board of Directors, with the primary focus being family law.

Qualifications: This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a paralegal degree or comparable experience who has knowledge of the legal system, familiarity with legal software systems, and Microsoft office computer skills. This person should be able to demonstrate sensitivity towards low-income populations and should have the ability to work timely and effectively independently or as part of a team. The ability to become a licensed notary is required and preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual.

Summer 2023 Clerkship

Legal Services Alabama is seeking law students dedicated to serving low income communities and increasing access to justice for Summer 2023 clerkship positions across the state. 

Summer Law Clerks assist LSA attorneys throughout the firm in representing clients, conducting legal research, drafting documents, and supporting all aspects of the provision of civil legal aid.

LSA Summer Law Clerks also participate in our Clerkship Training Program which provides foundational skills in our core areas of practice—including housing, consumer law, family, education, elder, and public benefits. Clerks are encouraged to take advantage of other timely and innovative firm-wide opportunities and initiatives. Strong legal research and writing skills are required, creativity and innovation are preferred. 

Law students may be assigned to a particular office and/or practice area and will have strong mentors while expanding and enhancing client access and services.

Applicants are asked to express in their cover letter any preferences for location (Dothan, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery, Anniston, or Mobile) and/or area of interests in the law.

Summer Law Clerks typically work full-time for 6 weeks sessions, split into either first or second half. LSA also offers full 12 week placements for a limited number of exceptional students.
