CONTRACT ATTORNEY – MOBILE, ALABAMA

Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA) is a statewide non-profit law firm that pursues its mission to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty. 

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL – LSA seeks to contract with one or more attorneys to provide legal services to help prevent homelessness in Mobile County Alabama. The contract is expected to remain in effect for one year but may be renewable for a longer term subject to funding availability.  

This project is sponsored by a grant through Mobile County. 

To be considered, the proposing attorney must be admitted to practice in the state of Alabama. Other evaluation factors (to be considered equally) will include expertise and experience with Alabama public benefit and housing law, knowledge of the Mobile area and housing-related challenges, provide $500,000 malpractice insurance coverage listing LSA and Mobile County as additional insured, and proposed price / cost (to allow calculation of total cost for the year, inclusive of the cost to provide required malpractice insurance).

LSA JOHN LEWIS FELLOWSHIP

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. LSA provides free, client-centered, civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities.

In honor of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice to build experience with a nonprofit civil legal aid law firm located in Alabama. This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA’s statewide offices in Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of social injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will advocate for clients, coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.

Qualifications: The position is an exciting opportunity for candidates who have sat for a Bar Exam or who are already licensed in any state. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law along with lived or other meaningful and sustained experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required and initiative and creativity are preferred. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual.

Pro Bono Manager

Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA), is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. LSA provides free, client-centered civil legal advocacy to low-income Alabamians and collaborates with others across the state and nation to find solutions to systemic issues caused by poverty and social justice inequities. 

The Pro Bono Manager will be responsible for building and supporting innovative programming designed to increase access to justice for LSA’s client communities and assist pro se litigants. The Pro Bono Manager will manage LSA’s Private Attorney Involvement (PAI) programs, assist in building volunteer lawyer pools, ensure the creation and upkeep of appropriate informational and marketing materials about PAI opportunities, close all PAI cases in a timely manner, recruit and supervise law students and volunteers, coordinate with the five VLP programs in Alabama and oversee the development of an annual PAI plan. The Pro Bono Manager will promote LSA’s mission, values, and principles within the organization and the community.

Qualifications: This position is an exciting opportunity for an attorney who is admitted to the Alabama Bar and who has five or more years of experience with a legal aid organization or related subject areas. The ideal candidate is passionate about serving low-income populations and has excellent communication skills as well as good judgment. The ability to train and supervise staff is required, as is the ability to set and meet deadlines. Preference is given to attorneys who are bilingual.
