Legal Services Alabama is seeking to serve as a host organization for a rising 3L interested in applying for a 2023 Equal Justice Fellowship to focus on Education Advocacy in Alabama.
The Equal Justice Fellowship is for two years and is offered to law school graduates interested in public interest law. LSA is seeking a fellow who is interested in education advocacy, with a focus on disability justice and building educational access for students experiencing the interlocking effects of poverty and discrimination. LSA would house the Equal Justice Fellow in one of our statewide offices and will include a comprehensive benefit package alongside the $59,000 grant salary. The Fellow will have an opportunity to work closely with our network of experienced attorneys specializing in poverty law and with the Managing Attorney of Client Access on pro bono direct legal services throughout the state.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of structural injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills, and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.
Qualifications: The position is an exciting opportunity for candidates who have sat for a Bar Exam or who are already licensed in any state. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law along with lived or other meaningful and sustained experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required and initiative and creativity are preferred. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual.
