Heir Property Project Staff Attorney – Mobile, Alabama

Legal Services Alabama, Inc. (LSA), is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. The Heir Property Staff Attorney will provide legal representation in civil legal matters with a primary focus on matters connected to heir property. The primary focus of the position will be to educate communities about heir property and the legal problems that can arise surrounding it and also to assist clients in resolving issues related to heir property. The attorney will organize and attend trainings, clinics, and strategy sessions to assist attorneys, litigants, and community partners. While the position is based in Mobile, AL, some travel around the state of Alabama may be required.

Director of Finance – Montgomery, Alabama

LSA seeks to employ a full-time Director of Finance. The position is based in LSA’s Headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama with 120 statewide employees. The ideal candidate will have the ability to direct and supervise all activities of the finance department including managing a finance team of five, preparation of budgets and financial reports, oversee and provide support for grant reporting and grant compliance on a Federal, state, local and foundation level, reviewing and approving weekly accounts receivable and payable, bi-weekly payroll, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, budget forecast, internal controls, audits, and monthly reporting. The Director of Finance will report directly to the Executive Director and provide reports to the LSA Board of Directors.

Qualifications: This Director of Finance position presents an exciting opportunity for individuals with a degree in accounting, business, or finance, coupled with at least 5 years of progressive accounting experience. Successful candidates must demonstrate proficiency in managing budgets of at least ten million dollars. The role demands strong leadership skills as it entails managing a team within the finance department, ensuring adherence to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and overseeing financial operations. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and accounting software is essential, along with excellent written and oral communication skills to effectively convey complex financial information. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in maintaining financial integrity, preparing and analyzing financial statements, and collaborating with various departments to optimize processes and drive efficiency. Knowledge of financial systems and regulations is crucial for this role, offering an opportunity to contribute significantly to the organization’s financial success and strategic objectives. Mental Health Staff Attorney

John Lewis Legal Fellowship

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. In support of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established in 2019 to encourage young attorneys interested in working at the intersection of poverty law and racial justice to build experience with a nonprofit civil legal aid law firm located in Alabama. This position has the possibility of working from any of LSA’s statewide offices in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma, or Tuscaloosa.

LSA seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated commitment to devote their time and efforts to strong advocacy for clients in the face of social injustices. John Lewis Fellows focus on using legal advocacy, education, and outreach to address community-identified issues in collaboration with client communities and Alabama’s strong network of pro bono attorneys. Fellows will advocate for clients, coalition build, conduct outreach and training, organize free legal clinics and lead legal service projects that support access to justice. Ideal candidates will have strong communication skills and an interest in community empowerment and lawyering.

Qualifications: The position is an exciting opportunity for candidates who will be sitting for a Bar Exam in July 2024 or February 2025 or who are already licensed in any state. Preference will be given to candidates who are licensed in Alabama. Candidates should have a demonstrated interest in public interest law along with lived or other meaningful and sustained experiences with people living in poverty, people of color, or communities who have traditionally faced structural barriers to justice. Strong legal writing and communication skills are required, and initiative and creativity are preferred. Preference is given to candidates who are bilingual.

Domestic Violence Staff Attorney – Montgomery, Alabama
