AL – October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is raising awareness by announcing the addition of a new Domestic Violence Resource Hub to the LSA website.
The online resource hub aims to provide comprehensive support and assistance to survivors of domestic violence, furthering LSA’s commitment to combating intimate partner and gender-based violence and promoting safety and justice for all.
The LSA Domestic Violence Resource Hub is a central online platform offering a wealth of resources, information, and tools tailored to individuals affected by domestic violence. Whether seeking legal advice, emotional support, or practical guidance, survivors and their allies can access a wide range of services and information to help them navigate the complexities of domestic violence situations.
Tyler Brannon, LSA’s Domestic Violence Lead Attorney, partners with One Place of the Shoals to deliver legal aid to survivors in North Alabama.
“Alabama abuse victims often lack access to resources,” Brannon says. “In rural portions of the state, there are fewer shelters or support services, and they are harder to access. Outside of a few larger cities, it is almost impossible to access resources without a vehicle, which victims often do not have. The resources contained in this hub shorten the distance between victims and assistance.”
Free LSA domestic violence services include but are not limited to legal protection from abuse (PFA), divorce, child custody, child support, and accessing public benefits. Additionally, LSA partners with other domestic violence advocacy organizations around the state to connect survivors with further tools like safe housing support and resources to help stabilize their daily lives.
According to Brannon, “Leaving domestic violence is a challenge. Leaving domestic violence without support can be impossible. Many victims in Alabama lack resources or knowledge about how to end an abusive relationship. For example, Alabama’s special purpose domestic violence restraining order, the Protection from Abuse (PFA), is very powerful. A PFA can provide same-day relief to any victim needing an expedited solution. Many victims do not even know where to start, let alone how to leave. This resource offers answers at every step of a victim’s journey to freedom.” Additional services are also available by calling the LSA statewide Call Center at 866-456-4995.
