Legal Services Alabama (LSA) appoints Interim Executive Director
Montgomery, AL – December 28, 2017 – Legal Services Alabama (LSA) announces the appointment of Guy Lescault to serve as Interim Executive Director effective January 1, 2018. Mr. Lescault has over 35 + years of experience in the Legal Services Community, including serving as Program Counsel for the Office of Program Performance for Legal Services Corporation (LSC). He has served as a Long Term Interim Director for LSC funded programs in Washington DC, Massachusetts, and New Mexico. Mr. Lescault was part of the original team in the Atlanta Regional office of Legal Services Corporation that helped establish the first three Legal Services Corporation grantees in Alabama in the 1970’s, including the Huntsville, Birmingham and Statewide legal services programs.
In his capacity as Interim Director, Lescault will assist LSA, the Alabama State Bar, The Alabama Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and other partners in conducting a comprehensive legal needs assessment and priority setting process which identifies and focuses on the most pressing legal problems of the low-income community in Alabama.
In announcing the appointment, LSA Board Chair, Phil D. Mitchell of Decatur, said, “The Board of LSA is extremely fortunate to have someone with Mr. Lescault’s experience at the helm of LSA. His former engagement with Legal Services Corporation and the ABA, and his national perspective on Access to Justice Initiatives, will be a tremendous asset as we work with our partners in the coming year to address the civil legal needs of the low income community in Alabama.”
At its December 15th meeting, the LSA Board also announced the appointment of Jaffe Pickett as Deputy Director of the program. Pickett has led LSA since August as both Interim Executive Director as well as Director of Resource Development. In recognizing Pickett’s leadership, outgoing LSA Board Chair LaVeeda Battle praised her “commitment and hard work in blasting through to a new level of funding for the program” as LSA achieved a long-term goal of receiving non-LSC funding above the $1 million mark for 2017. As a continuing member of the leadership team at LSA, Pickett stated, “I am excited about the opportunity to focus on obtaining sustainable and adequate funding to provide services in all 67 Alabama Counties. We at LSA are looking forward to working with Mr. Lescault who has decades of experience in providing transitional leadership to legal aid programs around the country.”
