From Issues to Actions Community Forum

From Issues to Actions Community Forum

On Saturday, March 12th LSA attorneys will participate in the “From Issues to Actions” Community Forum on heir property and community blight.

Research indicates that in some Black and Brown neighborhoods over 80% of blighted and boarded up properties are heir properties.

Heirs’ property is property passed to family members by inheritance, usually without a will, or without an estate planning strategy. Typically, it is created when land is passed from someone who dies “intestate,” meaning without a will, to their spouse, children, or others who may be legally entitled to the property.

Heir property disproportionately affects low-income communities, as people without easy access to legal help are more likely to pass without a will in place.

The forum will educate the community about what heir property is and the relationship and ripple effects between heir property and blight.

Attendees will also be able to ask questions at an open Q&A panel with the opportunity to speak one-on-one with housing advocates and attorneys.

Mobile Staff Attorney, Valynda Jerome-Williams, along with attorneys from LSA Montgomery will present together on a panel and be available to give legal advice to attendees.

The forum is sponsored by Isaiah Sankey, 4th District Commissioner Montgomery County and Maggie Street Community Development Corporation. Special guests include representatives from the National Center for Law and Economic Justice.
