Why Give to LSA?

Every year, thousands of low-income individuals across the state of Alabama seek free legal help from Legal Services Alabama (LSA) however, for every individual that is successful in obtaining help, there are even more who could not receive services due the demand for legal help among the poor in Alabama far exceeding our current staff’s capacity.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the demand for individuals seeking legal representation, a portion of this increase is due to the issues surrounding the pandemic. But before the pandemic, LSA was experiencing an increase in the demand for representation in the areas of housing and foreclosures, domestic violence, debt collection, benefit denials, voting rights restoration, court fines and fees, and expungement requests, and we could not represent all clients because of our limited capacity. The cases and the lack of representation keep low-income and impoverished communities at a disadvantage for employment, economic empowerment, and exercising their fundamental rights.

LSA is Alabama’s only free legal aid resource for low-income people in all 67 counties. You can support LSA projects and programs through monthly or bimonthly giving, or a one-time donation. You can directly fund one of our project endowments or give to our general ledger. Read more about giving options below to choose where you’d like to send your donation. Clicking the campaign title will redirect you to its giving portal. Your tax-deductible donation will help LSA change lives.

Ways to Give

Legal Services Alabama is the only non-profit law firm providing free civil legal assistance to low-income Alabamians and the only LSC-funded program in the state. General giving donations support LSA’s everyday legal work with low-income clients in all 67 counties of Alabama. LSA service areas include: Domestic Violence, Public Benefits, Housing Issues, Consumer Protection and more.

LSA launched the John Lewis Legal Services Fellowship program in the spring of 2019, in preparation for the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act. The goal of the John Lewis Legal Services Fellowship Program is to train recent law graduates who have an interest in rural economic justice for a career in public interest and social justice law to provide social, economic, and legal change, while working on legal issues that will improve the quality of life for low-income individuals. In addition to training the fellows, we also provide a glimpse into the life and work of Congressman Lewis, through a speaker’s series and tours that travel in the Congressman’s footsteps in Alabama. In the spring of each year, LSA hand-selects the year’s new fellows to continue the work of the late John Lewis. Your support is essential. Click here to learn more about the program and fellows.

In January 2020, LSA purchased a building located at 428 South Perry St, Montgomery, AL. The new location will honor LSA’s commitment to racial and social justice by providing client access to transportation, local courts, and a state-of-the-art technological call center. LSA’s requests for assistance with eviction and tenant complaints have increased by 70 percent from 2019. Your Capital Campaign donation will help support the development of trailblazing access to justice for low-income Alabamians across the state.
