Eligible Veterans for assistance under the LSV-H Program include those who:

Served in the active military, naval, air, or space service, and who were discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable

AND

Are experiencing homelessness
Or are at risk for homelessness

Housing

  • Eviction defense & homelessness prevention
  • Landlord-tenant cases
  • Foreclosure cases

Family Law

  • Assistance in court proceedings for child support and custody
  • Divorce
  • Estate planning
  • Family reconciliation
  • Protective orders and other matters related to domestic or intimate partner violence

Income Support

  • Assistance in obtaining public benefits
  • Assistance in obtaining or preserving SSI & SSDI
  • Consumer law matters such as debt collection, garnishments, predatory lending, fraud or deceit, and other financial exploitation

*Criminal Defense

  • Outstanding warrants
  • Fines
  • Driver’s license revocation
  • Citations
  • Expungement or sealing of criminal record
  • Other criminal issues associated with homelessness prevention

Additional Legal Needs

  • Employment law matters
  • Access to healthcare
  • Requests to upgrade the characterization of a discharge or dismissal (under 10 U.S.C. 1553)
*LSA is a civil, legal aid provider. Through grant funding from the US Dept. of Veterans Affairs we are able to help Veterans with criminal issues that are symptomatic of homelessness. These criminal services are limited in scope and only available to clients who are Veterans.

We lead presentations at libraries, county extension offices, churches, schools, community centers, online, and more!

We also staff tables at resource fairs and other events throughout Alabama.
