JOHN LEWIS FELLOWSHIP

Legal Services Alabama (LSA), is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. As a non-profit law firm, our mission is to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty.

In honor of LSA’s ongoing mission, the John Lewis Fellowship was established to support up to a full year of purposeful legal projects promoting the safety and wellbeing of low-income individuals.   This position will operate virtually and/or from one of LSA’s Regional Offices located in Anniston, Birmingham, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Selma or Tuscaloosa.

The Fellowship seeks individuals with deep social and humanitarian concerns and a demonstrated willingness to devote their time and efforts to the betterment of society’s most vulnerable citizens. The John Lewis Fellow will work on various initiatives which will help identify and provide solutions to problems which have affected the poor and disadvantaged resulting from the COVID – 19 pandemic. Projects will focus on analyzing data and the effects on clients housing, safety, income, benefits, education and other goals established by the Fellow and mission of LSA.

QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of law school. Admission to Bar or willingness to sit for bar exam. Commitment to public interest law. Experience working with low-income population a plus.  Strong legal writing and communication skills.

• Salary $42,756

Managing Attorney—Birmingham, AL

Legal Services Alabama (LSA) is one of the largest statewide law firms in Alabama. As a non-profit law firm, our mission is to serve low-income people by providing civil legal aid and by promoting collaboration to find solutions to problems of poverty. LSA seeks to employ a Managing Attorney in Birmingham, Alabama.  The Managing Attorney will have the general responsibility for daily operations and supervision of the staff in the Birmingham Regional Office. The Managing Attorney will also be responsible for maintaining a caseload in LSA’s core areas, including consumer protection, eviction and foreclosure defense, protection of victims of domestic violence, public benefit cases and other priority areas identified by LSA’s Board of Directors.  The Managing Attorney will also promote the visibility of LSA within the communities covered by the office, and among the bar and judiciary.

QUALIFICATIONS
Admitted to practice in the State of Alabama or willing to take necessary steps to be admitted to the Alabama Bar within 6 months of employment.  Experience working with low-income population preferred.  Five or more years’ experience in legal aid services or related substantive areas.  Supervisory experience preferred.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Spanish language proficiency desirable.

Communications Coordinator—Montgomery, AL

LSA seeks applications from qualified persons for a Communications Coordinator. This is a full-time position located at LSA’s headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama.  

Under the general supervision of the Director of Development, the Communications Coordinator provides high-level assistance to the Director of Development in communications to the community, LSA staff and Board.  The Communications Coordinator develops and produces publications, social media postings, brochures, newsletters, and news releases to define LSA identity to the staff, clients and broader community.  This position helps manage and expand donor lists and provides recognition of donors and staff, assist with grant writing and fundraising efforts.  This position requires flexibility, attention to detail and deadlines, organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and take initiative.  The Communications Coordinator will promote LSA’s mission, values, brand and principles within the regional office, the organization as a whole and the community.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, and/or journalism (print or broadcast).  Experience with non-profits preferred.  At least two (2) years’ experience in relevant field. Journalism and media communications experience preferred.  Experience in publications and reporting required.  Must be self-motivated and organized.  Ability to work timely and effectively; independently or as part of a team.  Must be able to travel.

Paralegal–Selma, AL

Staff Attorney—Montgomery, AL

Paralegal—Montgomery Central Office

LSA seeks applications from qualified paralegals for its Alabama Program for the Enhancement of Elder Legal Services (APEELS) project.  This is a full-time position located in our Montgomery Central Office.  

Under the APEELS Project Attorney’s supervision, the Paralegal will assist in providing direct legal services to older Alabamians.  The Paralegal will help implement, document and evaluate project goals; assist in coordinating and participate in community outreach clinics; assist in developing written materials for education and seminars; and engage with other service providers to meet the needs of clients or potential clients.

QUALIFICATIONS
