Rural Summer Legal Corp Fellow

Equal Justice Works and the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) partner every summer for the Rural Summer Legal Corp program.

LSA is a host organization for Summer 2021. We are seeking a Rural Summer Legal Corps Student Fellow who will support LSA’s Rural Health Justice Project, a virtual medical legal partnership (MLP) in collaboration with Rural Health Medical Program, Inc. (RHMPI). LSA’s Rural Health Justice Project connects rural health center patients with unmet civil legal needs to LSA and our pro bono volunteers, addressing social determinants of health through civil legal action.

The Student Fellow will assist LSA staff with direct representation of MLP clients to secure housing, ensure safety, create economic stability, and provide support for public benefits and educational needs. The Fellow will also conduct community outreach with guidance and mentoring from LSA attorneys and help to organize virtual clinics. 

The student fellow will receive a $5000 stipend for their service.

LSA seeks applications from qualified persons for a Development Coordinator. This is a full-time position located at LSA’s headquarters in Montgomery, Alabama. 

Under the general supervision of the Director of Resource Development, the Development Coordinator provides high-level assistance to the Development Department. The Development Coordinator helps identify and apply for various funding opportunities.  This position requires flexibility, attention to detail and deadlines, knowledge of effective grant applications and grant writing, excellent organizational skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and initiative.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in relevant fields of study required.

Experience with non-profits and low-income population preferred.

At least three (3) years of experience in event, grant or fundraising activities.

Must be self-motivated and organized.  Ability to work timely and effectively; independently or as part of a team.  Must be able to travel.

This is a full-time position located in our Montgomery Regional Office. The attorney will provide services primarily in Lee, Chambers, Tallapoosa and Russell counties.

The attorney will provide community outreach and civil legal representation in family law, housing, consumer protection, public benefits, unemployment compensation and other priorities established by the Board of Directors. 

Qualifications:

Admitted to practice in the State of Alabama or willing to take necessary steps to be admitted to Alabama bar within 6 months of employment. Sensitivity towards low-income population.

Contract Case Manager – Mobile Alabama

LSA seeks to contract for a Case Manager who will assist clients through funds awarded through the County of Mobile.  This position is expected to last approximately one year. Under the Managing Attorney’s general supervision, the Case Manager will determine client eligibility, develop and provide a comprehensive plan, implementation and evaluation of clients who qualify for the CDBG Program. 

The Case Manager will help with intake, return phone calls, conduct screening and file management. This position requires flexibility, attention to detail and deadlines, organizational skills, strong computer skills and the ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise sound judgment, and take the initiative. The Case Manager will work with other team members to develop goals and timelines for the successful implementation of the project. The Case Manager will comply with LSA’s mission, values, and principles within the regional office, the organization, and the community.

Qualifications:

Experience with non-profits and low-income population preferred.  A one-year certificate from college program or technical school or commensurate experience.

REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL – LSA seeks to contract with one or more Attorneys to provide legal services to help prevent homelessness in Mobile County Alabama.  The contract is expected to remain in effect for one year but may be renewable for a longer term subject to funding availability.  

This project is sponsored by a grant through the County of Mobile. 

To be considered, the proposing attorney must be admitted to practice in the State of Alabama. Other evaluation factors (to be considered equally) will include expertise and experience with Alabama public benefit and housing law, knowledge of the Mobile area and housing-related challenges, provide $500,000 malpractice insurance coverage listing LSA and Mobile County as additional insured, and proposed price / cost (to allow calculation of total cost for the year, inclusive of the cost to provide required malpractice insurance)..
